This report is concerned with the engineering parameters and designs and scale-up of bioreaction systems. The batch and continuous bioreactors reviewed here include those that are used commercially and some of those that have been evaluated at the research and development stages.
This report also presents a brief review on the mechanisms and kinetics of bioreactions, the understanding and application of which are needed for proper reactor selection, design, and scale-up, and on the technologies of medium and air sterilizations, both of which are necessary for aseptic operation of the reactors.
We have developed some correlations on price as a function of capacity for selected equipment. They are included in this report.
Technical information for the study was obtained mainly from technical journals, books, vendors, and technical bulletins and data sheets from manufacturers.
