This report concerns principally the production of melamine from urea. Although all commercial processes are reviewed in this study, only the four urea-based processes that have the largest total installed production capacities at present are covered in the process economics. Commercial processes using dicyandiamide and a research process using hydrogen cyanide are also briefly reviewed.
Process information was obtained mainly from patents, technical journals, and consultation with some melamine manufacturers. Information on the industry status was assembled mainly from various trade and tech- nical journals, governmental publications, and communications with the industry.
