In this report we examine the fluidized bed technology for making linear low density polyethylene, and three gas phase processes to produce polypropylene.
Section 4 describes the production of LLDPE as practiced and licensed by Union Carbide Corporation (Unipol® process). This updates the design presented in PEP Report 19B. BP Chimie's process is described in Section 9. We present the economics of three processes to produce polypropylene: BASF's vertical stirred bed, UCC/Shell's fluidized bed, and Amoco's horizontal stirred bed (an update of PEP Review 82-1-1). These processes are described in detail in Sections 5, 6, and 7, respectively. The economics of these processes are compared in Section 8.
In addition, we present two processes to produce polypropylene block copolymers. These processes, developed by BASF and UCC/Shell, are described in Sections 5 and 6, respectively.
