This report is a supplement to Process Economics Program Report No. 57, "Polyvinyl Acetate and Polyvinyl Alcohol," issued in November 1970. The present report covers patents and other technical information received at SRI since the issuance of the previous report. The processes revised in this report are those for manufacturing polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) emulsion and ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) emulsion, the latter having a vinyl acetate content greater than 50wt%; PVAc resin by suspension polymerization and by solution polymerization; and polyvinyl alcohol (PVAL) resin by solution polymerization and alcoholysis. The revisions are largely in the area of polymerization; for example, the reactors are larger and the reactions are faster than they were in our previous design. Also evaluated is a process producing polyvinyl butyral (PVB) by solution polymerization of vinyl acetate followed by alcoholysis of the PVAc to PVAL and condensation of the PVAL with n-butyraldehyde. Supplemental information is included in Appendices A through D.
