LIMA, PERU, JANUARY 31 2021: S&P Dow Jones Indices ("S&P DJI"), the world's leading index provider, and the Lima Stock Exchange ("BVL"), announced today the launch of the S&P/BVL Ingenius Index. The new index measures the performance of the world’s best known high-growth companies in communications, e-commerce, technology, and more.
Technology-driven companies have delivered dramatic growth to investors in the last five years with the FAANG group of stocks growing 340 percent compared to the S&P 500’s 113 percent from the beginning of 2017 through the end of 2021. This growth story has helped lead to an increased relevance of US and foreign stocks in international markets including Latin America.
"The launch of the S&P/BVL Ingenius Index speaks directly to the increasing appetite for US and other foreign equities by Peruvian investors," said Silvia Kitchener, Director of Equity Product Management in Latin America for S&P Dow Jones Indices. "This is a first-of-its-kind benchmark in Peru measuring the performance of companies creating many of the innovative products and services that permeate the modern world."
Miguel A. Zapatero, Chief Executive Officer of the Lima Stock Exchange ("BVL" in Spanish), said "this new index will provide a benchmark for local investors who seek to participate in new global technology trends through the local exchange. Peruvian investors are increasingly balancing local and international exposures in their investment, having traded USD1bn in international ETFs and stocks at BVL in 2021, about 25% of the total equity volume. This benchmark will be part of this evolution."
