Russia has rerouted coal imports from European markets to India amid a power crisis in India and Western sanctions arising from Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Bloomberg News reported June 16, citing industry sources.
Earlier this month, Coal India Ltd. issued a tender to buy 2.4 million tonnes of coal from overseas by September-end to build on inventory, addressing fears of a fuel shortage.
Russian coking coal shipments to India are also picking up, and have more than doubled to China in April, the news wire noted, citing an ING report.
Russia's thermal coal exports to Europe have fallen to about 10% to 15% of total exports from 30% before the invasion, according to two executives at Russian coal miners. Since the invasion, Europe has looked to South Africa and Australia as alternative suppliers.
Germany remains a buyer of Russian coal, while Poland halted imports in April, according to the executives. Meanwhile, Turkey is still a big market for Russian coal.
