Highview Power Storage Ltd. started work on a 50-MW liquid air energy storage facility in the U.K. in partnership with Carlton Power Ltd.
The company received a £10 million grant from the U.K. Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy in June to develop the project in Trafford Energy Park, on the outskirts of Manchester.
The facility, which has a minimum storage capacity of 250 MWh, will be one of Europe's largest energy storage systems, according to a Nov. 6 news release.
It is set to enter commercial operation in 2023 and will use existing substation and transmission infrastructure, with its income derived from several markets such as arbitrage, the capacity market and ancillary services.
"Our facility will deliver much needed clean, reliable and cost-efficient long duration energy storage to the National Grid PLC," Highview Power CEO and President Javier Cavada said. "The [project] will help the U.K. to integrate renewable energy and stabilize the regional electrical grid to ensure future energy security during blackouts and other disruptions."
