Venture capital-backed funding rounds worldwide plunge in May

Global venture capital-backed funding rounds totaled $27.67 billion in May, a 45.4% decrease from $50.71 billion secured in the same month in 2021, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence data.

The number of funding rounds with venture capital participation also fell, dropping 16% to 1,469 rounds from 1,749 in May 2021.

Month over month, the amount raised declined 23.5% from $36.18 billion in April.

Companies in the U.S. and Canada secured about $13.88 billion in 498 funding rounds. Asia-Pacific received $7.14 billion in 479 funding rounds, while Europe got $4.72 billion across 382 transactions.

The technology, media and telecommunications sector remains the biggest recipient of venture capital in May, raking in 43.9% of the total. It was followed by the healthcare and industrial sectors with 14.1% and 12.3%, respectively.

CNNP Rich Energy Corp. Ltd.'s $1.10 billion mature funding round was the biggest venture capital investment announced during the month. Huihua Fund Management Co. Ltd.'s National Military and Civilian Integration Industry Investment Fund Co. Ltd. participated in the round.

Ultima Genomics Inc.'s growth funding came in second, securing $600 million from investors including General Atlantic Service Co. LP, aMoon Fund, Andreessen Horowitz LLC, Founders Fund Inc., Khosla Ventures LLC, Lightspeed Ventures LLC and Playground Global LLC's Playground Global fund.
