Global venture capital investments fall in April

The value of investments from global venture capital firms decreased 15.8% from the previous month to $36.2 billion in April and plunged 37% year over year, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence data.

The total number of deals made public in April was down 15.9% from the 1,820 transactions announced in the comparable period of 2021.

Epic Games Inc.'s $2 billion funding round topped the list for the month. The video game and software developer was set to receive $1 billion from existing investor Sony Group Corp. and a similar amount from new investor Kirkbi Invest A/S.

India-based VerSe' Innovation Private Ltd. and Singapore-based Coda Payments Pte. Ltd. came in second and third, respectively. Canada Pension Plan Investment Board led the $805 million series J round for VerSe' Innovation. Other investors in this transaction included Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan Board and Luxor Capital Group LP.

Coda Payments raised $690 million in an equity round of funding. Smash Capital, Insight Venture Management LLC and GIC Pte. Ltd. participated in the round.

The U.S. and Canada saw 540 venture capital deals totaling $17.5 billion in April, down 11.1% from $19.7 billion in March. Asia-Pacific hosted 525 transactions at an aggregate valuation of $9.1 billion, compared to $12.5 billion in March. Europe came in third with 373 deals totaling $8 billion, down almost 7% from March.

The technology, media and telecommunications sector remains the biggest recipient of venture capital investment. The sector attracted 56.5% of all venture capital deployed in April. It was followed by healthcare at 14.1% and industrials at 11.3%.
