Former UAW president pleads guilty in corruption investigation

Former United Auto Workers President Gary Jones pleaded guilty to embezzlement and defrauding charges on June 3 as part of a federal investigation into the union.

Jones, who resigned in November 2019, was the 14th person charged in the yearslong UAW bribery investigation that has included connections to Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV in which officials concealed and misused funds as part of a kickback scheme.

The UAW said in a statement that Jones and others "abused their high-ranking positions and violated the trust of our members."

Jones pleaded guilty to conspiracy to embezzle union funds and use a facility of interstate commerce to aid racketeering, plus conspiracy to defraud the U.S., according to court documents filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

Jones, UAW president from June 2018 through October 2019, participated in unlawful use of UAW funds and concealing the theft, according to court documents. More than $1 million in UAW funds was misused by multiple officials for golfing, cigars, liquor and other items, the documents said.

The former union president faces up to five years in prison. Jones' sentencing is set for Oct. 6.

The UAW announced ethics reforms in November 2019 to avoid future misconduct.
