Process Economics Program (PEP) Report No. 1, of which this report is a supplement, was concerned specifically with the production of 80/20 TDI. While TDI is still the main topic, this report tries to cover all the commercial organic isocyanates, including monoas well as polyisocyanates. The manufacture of the more important isocyanates is evaluated, and the less important ones are qualitatively described. Some isocyanates not in commercial production but believed to have some potentiality are also included.
At present, all major isocyanates are commercially produced by phosgenating an amine. However, there are other routes that could have potential for large-scale production. Several such possibilities are evaluated in this report.
This study does not include thioisocyanates, inorganic, isocyanates, and isocyanurates except as they may be related to the production of organic isocyanates.
