This report is concerned with the current status of coal gasification technology and the costs for the production of syngas (H2 + CO) by the following processes:
- Texaco
- HT (high temperature) Winkler.
Roth processes are so-called "second generation" technologies that are on the verge of large scale demonstration and commercialization. The Texaco gasifier is of the entrained-flow type; the HT Winkler gasifier employs a fluidieed-bed. Each technology has its unique qualities and operates most efficiently on specific types of coal. For the Texaco gasifier, we use Illinois No. 6 bituminous coal as a feedstock; for the RT Winkler gasifier, we use Texas lignite.
Some economic data on the Texaco process are presented in PEP Report No. 148, "Costs of Synthesis Cases and Methanol," but without design and cost estimate details, which are given in the present report.
