Default, Transition, and Recovery: Halcón Resources' Bankruptcy Raises The Corporate Default Tally To 71

This year's global corporate default tally increased to 71 as of Aug. 7, 2019, after Texas-based oil and gas exploration and production company Halcón Resources Corp. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy (see "Halcón Resources Corp. Downgraded To 'D' From 'CC' After Voluntarily Filing For Chapter 11 Bankruptcy," Aug. 7, 2019). Oil and gas defaults total 14 so far this year, up significantly from the 2018 full-year total of just 12 defaults.

This Week's Observations

  • Of the 14 oil and gas defaulters so far in 2019, 12 are from the U.S., one is from Europe, and one is from Canada.
  • The majority of defaults so far in 2019 are from the U.S., with 69% of all global corporate defaults.
  • For the third year in a row, distressed exchanges lead the default tally with 22, followed by missed interest payments with 21.
