Software, an automotive disruptor
Many do not think of cultural transformations as disruptive, merely because they take so long to complete. However, in the automotive industry, a cultural transformation is underway, wherein a new "software-first" culture is taking hold at many automakers and suppliers alike.
The rationale is to build competency and capacity for software development and integration in-house, and to focus on this aspect, before addressing hardware or vehicle platforms.
A fundamental shift like this is quite foreign for the industry, but OEMs like Toyota, Volkswagen, Renault, GM, and others see it as an essential defense mechanism against disruptors like Tesla, and the Tech Giants that encroach on the automotive market on a daily basis.
As this software-defined car trend continues, software will ultimately become the product of OEMs and the vehicles merely the applications.
