'Shark Week' returns for 30th anniversary; '13 Reasons Why' renewed for season 3

The Program Guide highlights recent programming announcements from various networks and online video platforms in the U.S.

On TV

* Cooking Channel (US) on July 12 will premiere new a cooking series, featuring chef Richie Farina. Called "Carnival Kings," the series will show Farina traveling across the U.S. to challenge carnival chefs for a cook-off featuring their famous fare, according to a June 5 news release.

* 21st Century Fox Inc.'s FX Network (US) renewed "Legion" for a third season, Variety reported June 1. Based on the Marvel Comics by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz, the series follows David Haller, a man who believed himself to be schizophrenic only to discover that he may actually be the most powerful mutant the world has ever seen.

* Time Warner Inc.'s HBO (US) subscribers can now stream HBO Europe's original productions "Head Over Heels" and "When Shall We Kiss" on HBO NOW, HBO GO, HBO On Demand and on partners' streaming platforms. Both series, based on the same Israeli-format "When Shall We Kiss," depict complex sexual relationships in contemporary Central Europe, according to a June 1 news release.

* Home makeover series "Trading Spaces" will return to TLC (US) for a second season, according to a May 30 news release. "Trading Spaces" is produced by Authentic Entertainment, a subsidiary of Endemol Shine North America.

* Following a controversial tweet by the show's star Roseanne Barr, Walt Disney Co.'s ABC (US) canceled sitcom "Roseanne." The network's axing of the revived comedy came after Barr called former President Barack Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett an offspring of the "Muslim Brotherhood & Planet of the Apes." Barr subsequently apologized.

* Discovery Inc.'s Discovery Channel (US) will celebrate the 30th anniversary of "Shark Week" from July 22 through July 29. "Shark Week" 2018 will feature over 19 hours of programming with shows such as "Shark Tank Meets Shark Week," "Cuba's Secret Shark Lair" and "Uncaged: Shark vs Ronda Rousey," according to a May 23 news release.

* CBS Corp.'s CBS (US) canceled medical drama "Code Black" after three seasons, series creator and showrunner Michael Seitzman said in a May 23 tweet. The series takes place in the fictional Angels Memorial Hospital, where the high number of patients often outnumbers the limited resources available to doctors and patients, creating a situation known in some hospitals as a "code black."

* Viacom Inc.'s Nickelodeon (US) renewed four series: "PAW Patrol," "Blaze and the Monster Machines," "Rusty Rivets" and "Top Wing." "PAW Patrol" will return for a sixth season, "Blaze and the Monster Machines" will return for a fifth season, while "Rusty Rivets" and "Top Wing" have been renewed for third and second seasons, respectively, the network said May 22.

* HBO placed a second-season order for late-night series "Wyatt Cenac's Problem Areas," according to a May 22 news release. The network premiered the first season of the series on April 13.

On OTT

* "13 Reasons Why" will return for a third season on Netflix Inc.'s streaming service, Variety reported June 6, citing a company statement. The third season, which will consist of 13 episodes, will go into production later this year and will debut in 2019.

* Netflix green-lighted a new anthology series featuring Dolly Parton. Each episode of the series will be based on a song by Parton, the company said June 4. The series will feature eight episodes.

* E.W. Scripps Co.'s multiplatform national news network, Newsy, added a new show, "The Day Ahead," to its slate of original news programming. Produced live from Newsy's Chicago newsroom, "The Day Ahead" is hosted by Devan Kaney, according to a June 4 news release.

"PAW Patrol"

* Apple Inc. placed a straight-to-series order for a show about acclaimed 19th-century poet Emily Dickinson, Variety reported May 30. The half-hour series, starring Hailee Steinfeld, will be a comedic look into Dickinson's world.

* Amazon.com Inc. picked up sci-fi series "The Expanse" after it was canceled by Syfy (US), TheVerge.com reported May 26. The show will return for its fourth season on Amazon, according to the report.

* Netflix will stream original family drama "Northern Rescue" soon. The series, featuring 10 episodes, is a CBC and Netflix production, produced by Don Carmody Television, according to a May 24 news release. The 10-episode family drama follows John West as he moves his three children away from a hectic urban life to his small northern hometown after the death of his wife.

* Idris Elba will star, direct and produce a modern retelling of Victor Hugo's "Hunchback of Notre Dame" for Netflix. The untitled feature film will be a sonic and musical experience and Elba will produce the music as well, the company said May 23.
