Year in Pipelines: Gas projects in development support US Gulf Coast exports

US natural gas pipeline and storage infrastructure development in the 20232028 period is clustered around LNG terminals on the Gulf of Mexico, specifically in Texas and Louisiana, as exports of the fuel become one of the largest drivers of domestic gas demand.

The pipeline projectsin stages from announcement through construction, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence datawill help connect production areas in the Permian Basin and the Haynesville Shale to the Gulf Coast.

The pipeline projects linked to the Gulf Coast include those from Venture Global Delta Express LLC, Venture Global Gator Express LLC, Venture Global CP Express LLC, Port Arthur Pipeline LLC, Driftwood LNG Pipeline LLC, and Rio Bravo Pipeline Co. LLC.

Storage facilities in development — including significant projects in advanced development from Pine Prairie Energy Center LLC and Sempra's LA Storage LLC — are in close proximity to support export terminals.

In other US regions, the pipeline and storage projects announced or underway for 20232028 are generally focused on increases in interstate transportation capacity and on energy supply reliability.

Waves of pipe development

Pipeline projects with a combined gas transportation capacity of about 10 million Dth/d had in-service dates in 2023, according to Market Intelligence data, and projects representing almost twice as much capacity are expected to reach this milestone in 2024. Project completions are expected to drop in 2025 and then surge back in 2026 before winding down at the outer envelope of multiyear development plans.

After years of court challenges, permitting work and construction cost increases, one of the largest US interstate gas pipeline projects in development reached its final stage in 2023. Lead developer Equitrans Midstream Corp. said at the end of October that it expected the 2-Bcf Mountain Valley Pipeline LLC project to meet a first-quarter 2024 in-service target, which was an update from a previous estimate of late 2023.
