UPDATE: Congress reconvenes as Capitol secured after pro-Trump incursion

The U.S. Capitol complex has been secured hours after it was placed on lockdown Jan. 6 as rioting supporters of President Donald Trump forced their way into Congress, leading to at least one death and delaying the formal certification of President-elect Joe Biden's victory, multiple news agencies reported.

The Senate reconvened to resume the tally of Electoral College votes at about 8 p.m. ET, followed by the House of Representatives about an hour later. Earlier, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a letter to colleagues that "after calls to the Pentagon, the Justice Department and the Vice President," leaders of the lower chamber have decided to resume counting electoral votes once the Capitol is "cleared for use."

Pro-Trump protesters calling for overturning the election results stormed the House side of the Capitol building earlier Jan. 6, breaching exterior security barriers and clashing with authorities, according to the reports. At least one person was shot dead amid the riots, police said. Both the Senate and the House of Representatives went into recess and were evacuated, with Pelosi and Vice President Mike Pence among those taken to secure locations.

Meanwhile, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced a curfew for Washington, D.C. starting 6 p.m. ET on Jan. 6 until 6 a.m. the next day. Alexandria and Arlington, Virginia are also under curfew, reports said.

U.S. President-elect Joe Biden earlier called on Trump to go on national TV and "demand an end to this siege."

Hours after the Capitol insurgence, Trump tweeted a video asking the group to go home but maintaining his contention that the election was "stolen."

Twitter Inc. later removed the post along with two other tweets and announced that it would lock Trump's account for 12 hours due to "repeated and severe violations of our Civic Integrity policy."

"If the Tweets are not removed, the account will remain locked," Twitter said, adding that future violations "will result in permanent suspension of the @realDonaldTrump account."
