The U.K. government and local mobile network operators agreed to phase out 2G and 3G networks by 2033 as part of efforts to improve telecom supply chain security and support the transition to faster mobile networks.
Operators Vodafone Group PLC, EE Ltd., Hutchison 3G UK Ltd. and Virgin Media O2, the joint venture between Liberty Global PLC and Telefónica SA, reached an agreement with the government regarding the 2G and 3G network shutdowns, according to a Dec. 8 news release.
The government also unveiled plans to carry 35% of the U.K.'s mobile network traffic over Open Radio Access Network, or Open RAN, by 2030.
In addition, the government announced a new £50 million investment to support research and development initiatives in the telecom sector, as well as £36 million in funding for 15 projects to test Open RAN in Scotland, Wales and England. The government also intends to inject £15 million into the SONIC prototype testing facility for next-generation telco technology.
