Report: Metro Bank appoints law firm to probe potential US sanctions breach

Metro Bank PLC has appointed a law firm to investigate transactions that potential breached U.S. sanctions on Cuba and Iran, Reuters reported, citing a regulatory filing.

The Evening Standard reported earlier that top investigators at law firm DLA Piper are reviewing transactions from Cuba and Iran, as well as the bank's compliance controls.

The bank reportedly admitted in September 2019 that a payment to one of its customer accounts came from the U.K. unit of an Iranian entity.

In a Sept. 17, 2019, prospectus for a £3 billion euro medium-term note program, the bank said a widened probe by the U.K. Financial Conduct Authority relates to its regulatory reporting, governance system and the timing of announcements related to an accounting error.

Craig Donaldson and Vernon Hill both stepped down from their respective roles as CEO and chairman of Metro amid the accounting blunder scandal.
