NextEra solar farm in Arizona under contract to Salt River begins operation

NextEra Energy Inc.'s 100-MW Saint Solar power plant in Pinal County, Ariz., has begun commercial operations.

A subsidiary of NextEra's NextEra Energy Resources LLC business owns and operates the project, while the output is sold under a power purchase contract to Phoenix-area utility the Salt River Project, or SRP.

The solar farm's development was initiated under SRP's Sustainable Energy Offering program. SRP said in a Dec. 15 news release that 11 customers, including local municipalities, retailers and mining companies, have signed up for the output of the solar farm through the program.

The utility has a target of reaching 1,000 MW of solar power by the end of fiscal year 2025.

Saint Solar is part a deal under which NextEra Energy Resources has agreed to sell a 90% interest in a 1,000-MW renewable portfolio and a 100% stake in a 100-MW solar-plus-storage project for approximately $1.3 billion in total proceeds to another corporate affiliate, NextEra Energy Partners.
