MetLife, Mercury Insurance returning auto premiums amid COVID-19 crisis

MetLife Inc. and Mercury General Corp. joined a number of insurers that are offering auto premium rebates to customers amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

MetLife Auto & Home is halting cancellations of auto policies due to nonpayment through July 1 to offer relief to its customers. Auto customers who are paid to date will receive a 15% credit for April and May based on their monthly premiums.

MetLife Auto & Home, which already provides coverage for customers using personal vehicles to deliver medicine or food, is extending coverage under all of its personal auto insurance programs at no additional cost as customers make deliveries during the pandemic. The additional protection will be in place from March 20 to May 1.

Additionally, Mercury Insurance Co. will return over $65 million to its personal auto policyholders in 11 states where it operates. Customers will receive a 15% credit on monthly auto insurance premiums in April and May, subject to regulatory approval.
