Latin America's box office extends gains with 223.6% YOY revenue growth

Latin American cinemas reported positive numbers with cumulative gross box office revenue rising 223.6% year over year to $166.4 million in the first four months of the year, figures from OpusData compiled by S&P Global Market Intelligence show.

Mexico, Brazil and Argentina, the three monitored markets in the region, witnessed an uptick in film earnings for the period under review. Mexico was the top revenue grosser, with cinemas earning $114.8 million. The country also had the highest number of film releases, with 46 titles.

"Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore," a fantasy flick produced by Warner Bros. Pictures Inc. and Heyday Films Ltd., and Warner Bros. Pictures-distributed superhero film "The Batman," a March release, were among the top three films in Mexico and Brazil.

"Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore," the third installment in the "Fantastic Beasts" movie series, grossed $11 million in Mexico and $8.4 million in Brazil for the tracked period.

"The Batman" continued to top the charts securing $31.8 million in Mexico and $18.2 million in Brazil.

Meanwhile, the animated musical comedy "Sing 2," distributed by Universal Pictures, drew moviegoers to theaters relentlessly in Argentina. January-released Sing 2 earned $3.6 million in revenue year to date.

DreamWorks Animation LLC-produced computer-animated crime comedy "The Bad Guys" and mystery feature "Death on the Nile," based on Agatha Christie's novel and distributed by 20th Century Studios Inc., were the other popular films dominating Argentina's box office. Overall, Argentina's cumulative gross box office revenue year to date stood at $6.2 million.

There were 11 films released in Latin America in April, lower by 38.9% over the same month the previous year. Action and adventure was the favored genre by aggregate gross box office revenue in Latin America.
