IBM, Samsung, M1 team up for 5G-enabled manufacturing trial in Singapore

International Business Machines Corp. is teaming up with Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Singaporean wireless carrier M1 Ltd. to test 5G-enabled use cases for manufacturing.

The trial aims to design, develop, test and benchmark 5G-enabled industry 4.0 solutions that can be applied across various industries. The project will focus on using artificial intelligence technologies for automated visual inspection, improved equipment monitoring and predictive maintenance, as well as using augmented reality to enhance productivity and quality.

The trial will begin in June at an IBM facility in Singapore. Successful solutions developed during the project will be evaluated by IBM and Samsung for possible use in their operations in different markets and sectors.

The initiative is supported by Singaporean regulator Infocomm Media Development Authority, which plans to share the results of the project with small and medium-sized enterprises in the manufacturing sector and 5G ecosystem.
