Iberdrola SA started construction of its 23-MW Montalto di Castro solar plant in the region of Lazio, Italy.
The company's first photovoltaic solar facility in the country is expected to generate enough power for more than 12,000 homes and prevent 9,600 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, according to a July 11 news release.
"Iberdrola's mission in Italy is to contribute, with our expertise and financial capacity, to sustainable and ethical investments. The goal is to help Italy out of its dependence on gas and the energy crisis," said Valerio Faccenda, chairman of Iberdrola Renewables Italy.
Iberdrola has 43 facilities totaling 1,500 MW under development in Italy. The company has also agreed to develop another 17 wind and photovoltaic facilities totaling 327 MW under an agreement with GreenInvest.
