Google LLC is making its Google News service available again in Spain after almost eight years, according to a June 22 announcement by the Alphabet Inc. unit.
Google said the return of the service was made possible by Spain's adoption of the EU's Copyright Directive. Google said the law would allow content producers to make their own decisions regarding how their content can be used, discovered and monetized.
The U.S. tech company said it will work with publishers to strike agreements and launch Google News Showcase as soon as possible. Google News Showcase is the company's licensing program that pays publishers for the use of their content on Google News and Discover.
The relaunch of Google News in Spain came shortly after Google made binding commitments for fair negotiations of license deals with French news publishers, Dow Jones Newswires reported.
