European cinemas recorded $634.3 million in the first three months of 2022, reflecting a 209.7% year-over-year increase, according to figures from OpusData compiled by S&P Global Market Intelligence.
Russia's box office decline continued, with cumulative gross box office revenue falling 47.6% year over year to $96.8 million. However, Russia's film earnings for the period under review were second only to those of the U.K., the highest earner among monitored markets at $211.2 million.
Britain's film revenue and year-over-year progress got a boost from a fresh reboot of the Batman film franchise that featured at the box office helm.
"The Batman," a superhero film distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures Inc., collected $47 million in U.K. cinemas, followed by January release "Sing 2," a Universal Pictures-distributed computer-animated musical comedy, which clocked $42.3 million. The U.K. saw 149 film titles released during the tracked period.
"The Batman" was also the top grosser in Germany, France and Italy, where it collected $13.5 million, $19.3 million and $10.1 million, respectively.
Meanwhile, action-adventure title "Uncharted," produced by Columbia Pictures Industries Inc., among others, and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing Inc., topped the Russian box office with $23.1 million in earnings. Overall, Russia saw 80 film titles released.
