The Walt Disney Co. will launch its streaming service Disney+ in Eastern Europe and several Asia-Pacific markets in 2021, according to a company release.
Disney+ will go live in Singapore on Feb. 23, 2021, followed by Eastern Europe, Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea later next year.
The platform will provide an expanded content offer with the inclusion of general entertainment brand Star, which bundles TV and movie content from Disney studios such as Disney Television Studios, FX (US), 20th Century Studios and 20th Television.
With the addition of Star to its content roster, a Disney+ subscription in Europe will increase to €8.99 per month, or €89.99 per year. Similar pricing adjustments will take effect in Star's other launch markets, such as Australia, Canada and New Zealand.
Disney+ will also add more parental controls, including content access limits for some profiles based on content ratings and the ability to lock profiles from mature content.
In South Korea, Disney+ could go live between January and June 2021, either as a stand-alone service or through IPTV via a tie-up with one or two local mobile operators, The Korea Times reported Dec. 14, citing an industry source.
Apple Inc. is also reportedly preparing to set up its over-the-top business in South Korea through staff hires, adding Korean subtitles to its original content and producing local TV shows.
