Top News
"Cobra Kai" Source: Netflix |
* Netflix Inc. will premiere the fifth season of "Cobra Kai" on Sept. 9, Variety reported. Netflix also reportedly renewed "Sweet Magnolias" for a third season.
* The British Broadcasting Corp. will premiere "Elizabeth: The Unseen Queen" on May 29 on the BBC One channel and the iPlayer streaming service. BBC Studios Ltd. produced the 75-minute documentary, which will feature, for the first time, unseen private home movies of Queen Elizabeth II as a young princess.
The Americas
* Amazon.com Inc. unveiled three new reality series that will exclusively stream on Prime Video this summer in over 240 countries and territories globally. The shows include "The One That Got Away" premiering June 24; "Forever Summer: Hamptons" in July; and "Cosmic Love" in August.
* The fourth season of "Westworld" will premiere on HBO and HBO Max on June 26, Variety reported.
* Three of Allen Media Group LLC's television networks are joining the lineup of Cox Communications Inc.'s Contour TV platform, in line with the companies' carriage agreement. Subscribers will be able to watch JusticeCentral.TV, which features court shows, trials and legal news, and food-themed Recipe.TV.
* Corus Entertainment Inc. acquired the international distribution rights to "The Love Club," a set of romantic made-for-TV movies produced by Nikki Ray Media Agency for W Network Inc and Corus Studios. The four movies are set to premiere in winter 2023 and onward on W Network and will be available to stream live and on-demand Corus' streaming service StackTV.
* Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. added apps for Crackle Plus LLC-owned streaming services Chicken Soup for the Soul and Popcornflix to its offering. Crackle Plus also plans to launch its streaming services on Amazon's Fire TV, Roku Inc.'s Roku TV, and Apple Inc.'s Apple TV.
* In other Crackle Plus news, the streaming service unveiled its upcoming slate of more than 100 new originals and exclusives, including "Going from Broke" season 3 and "Inside the Black Box" season 2. Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment Inc. owns Crackle Plus.
Europe, Middle East and Africa
* Wi-flix added more content and signed distribution deals, allowing the Dutch-based African streaming service to gain 300,000 new subscribers in one year, Digital TV Europe reported. The platform, which has now passed the milestone of 1 million paying users, claims to offer over 30,000 hours of content and more than 10 linear channels.
* Swedish romantic-comedy series "Love and Anarchy" will return to Netflix for a second season, which premieres June 16.
* Netflix teamed up with public broadcaster YLE to produce its first Finnish series, "Dance Brothers." The young adult drama series will be released globally via Netflix in 2023, with a premiere on YLE to follow later.
Asia-Pacific
* Indian film "Gangubai Kathiawadi," which premiered April 26 on Netflix, became the most popular non-English film on the platform globally. The crime drama also made it to the list of top 10 films on Netflix in 25 countries in the week of May 5.
* Philippine media company ABS-CBN Corp., together with KROMA Entertainment and 917Ventures, unveiled a real-time multiscreen interactive channel named PIE, or Pinoy Interactive Entertainment, World Screen reported. The channel, which will allow viewers to watch TV shows and do other activities across multiple screens, is set to launch within May.
