The Science Based Targets initiative, or SBTi, approved the British Broadcasting Corp.'s plan to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, according to an Oct. 21 news release.
The so-called deep decarbonisation strategy, confirmed by the broadcaster in January, includes shifting to renewables and electric vehicles as well as cutting business travel and implementing more sustainable production methods.
With the SBTi's approval, the BBC will have to cut emissions for Scope 1 and 2, involving direct operations like those from buildings and general use of energy, by 46% by 2030. The broadcaster will also aim to reduce Scope 3 emissions from business travel and suppliers by 28% by the same year.
The targets are in line with goals agreed upon as part of the 2015 Paris Agreement.
The BBC appointed Danielle Mulder to the newly created role of director of sustainability in August to lead the development and implementation of the 2030 net-zero strategy.
