BBC, ITV to support UK independent producers amid coronavirus outbreak

The British Broadcasting Corp. and ITV PLC unveiled measures to support the U.K. independent production sector amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The BBC's five-point plan includes working with producers to develop flexible timetables for disrupted projects, increasing the size of its "Small Indie Fund" to £2 million, and boosting spending on content development opportunities. The public broadcaster will also seek more production tie-ups for online channel BBC Three, as well as boost investments in archive and acquisition rights.

Recently, the BBC donated £700,000 to The Film and TV Charity, which supports British employees across the film, TV and cinema industries.

ITV also created a £500,000 fund for independent producers to develop new content slated for the later part of 2020 and in 2021. It comes despite an expected reduction of at least £100 million in the commercial broadcaster's program budget due to less advertising during the COVID-19 outbreak.

The British government earlier committed to paying a "taxable grant" of up to £2,500 per month to self-employed workers affected by the coronavirus crisis, including those in the creative industries.
