AT&T offers to sell Crunchyroll to Sony for $1.5B – The Information

AT&T Inc. is in talks to sell Warner Media LLC's Crunchyroll Inc., a Japanese anime-streaming service company, to Sony Corp. for $1.5 billion, The Information reported Aug. 12, citing three people familiar with the situation.

Sources said that AT&T's asking price for Crunchyroll is above recent values for other niche streaming services and something that Sony may not accept. According to the report, AT&T's price translates to $500 per subscriber, or $100 more per subscriber than when AT&T valued the company in 2017.

However, if the two sides reach a deal, sources said it would strengthen Sony's position in the niche market since it also owns a rival anime service FUNimation Entertainment Ltd.

Warner Media's willingness to off-load Crunchyroll also shows AT&T's willingness to sell assets to bring down its massive debt load, the report noted.
