Box office revenue in Asia-Pacific fell 71.8% year over year to $3.81 billion in the first 11 months of 2020, according to data from OpusData compiled by S&P Global Market Intelligence.
This compares with year-over-year revenue declines of 76.8% and 84.1% in the year through October 2020 and September 2020, respectively.
The number of film releases rose 2.9% year over year in November 2020, the second increase since the coronavirus pandemic hit the region in January 2020.
Australia led Asia-Pacific film releases with 104 movies in November 2020. The country's box office revenue totaled $345.8 million in the year through November, a 53.5% year-over-year decline.
Re-releases replaced January debuts at the top of Australia's box office. The 2015 action film "Furious 7" grossed $31.9 million since its Nov. 20, 2020, re-release. The 2010 animation "Toy Story 3" made $31.2 million since its Nov. 26, 2020, re-release, while 2011 comedy film "Bridesmaids" earned $19.7 million.
Japan saw eight movie releases in November. Revenue in 2020 through November fell 54.5% to $819.2 million.
"Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Ressha-hen," an animation based on Japanese manga series Kimetsu no Yaiba, grossed $264.3 million at the box office since its debut Oct. 16, 2020. The film, ranking first in the 2020 box office, was produced by Ufotable and distributed by Aniplex Inc. and Toho Co. Ltd.
July 2020 release "I'm From Today!" and January 2020's Oscar-winning "Gisaengchung," or "Parasite," remained at the top of the box office.
China debuted 22 films in November 2020 and box office revenue totaled $2.26 billion in the 11-month period, down 76.1% year over year.
The Oct. 1, 2020, anthology film "Wo He Wo De Jia Xiang," or "My People, My Homeland," animation "Jiang Ziya," and August release "Ba bai" remained the top-grossing films of 2020 in China.
Releases in South Korea totaled 44 in November 2020, while the country's box office fell 75.4% year over year to $382.9 million. January 2020 release "Namsaneui Bujangdeul," August 2020's "Daman Akeseo Guhasoseo" and July 2020's "Ban-do" performed well.
In Asia-Pacific, action and adventure continues to be the most popular genre.
