* Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. expects the launch of new products such as 5G phones to drive up consumer demand in the next several quarters.
* PLDT Inc. unit Smart Communications launched its commercial 5G service in key business districts of Metro Manila, Philippines.
* Spark rolled out its 5G service in the city center of Palmerston North, New Zealand. The telco will extend its 5G coverage to four more locations before end-2020.
EUROPE, MIDDLE EAST AND AFRICA
* Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. asked the German government to let the company be a part of its 5G network expansion, Der Spiegel reported.
* Three Portuguese operators will not use Huawei equipment in their core 5G networks despite the absence of a government ban, Reuters reported.
* Russian media and telecom regulator Roskomnadzor granted a 5G license to Mobile TeleSystems PJSC.
* Qatari operator Ooredoo rolled out Nokia's cloud-native core network to support its 5G service.
* Orange SA and Google LLC's Google Cloud will jointly create 5G-based edge-computing services. Alphabet Inc. owns Google.
* Madagascar's telecom regulator ARTEC suspended Telecom Malagasy SA's 5G network after granting it a temporary one-month permit to test the technology, Ecofin Agency reported.
