Amid a shift to net-zero focused investment, real assets-focused private equity investors share their opinions on the market's direction, how governments can increase the flow of private capital, and challenges in getting clarity on sustainability data.
While environmental sustainability considerations have touched many sectors of the private markets in recent years, fund managers focused on real assets are among the most directly impacted by shifting capital flows and forthcoming regulations.
On behalf of S&P Global Market Intelligence, Mergermarket surveyed 30 senior executives from PE firms in the U.S. and Europe with a focus on real assets. The results, collected in Q4 2022, shed light on industry participants' views on important topics including the outlook for sustainability-focused investments and the hurdles to further expansion in the market.
Key findings include:
- Investors surveyed predicted the greatest growth in investment in the power system and energy space over the next 12-24 month horizon, with a larger share in transport over a 10 year horizon.
- Key obstacles to more private investment in sustainable infrastructure include shifting regulatory approaches (cited by 27% of respondents) and incomprehensive sustainability standards (cited by 23%).
- More than half of respondents said it has been difficult to gather and report data on the environmental impact of their portfolio, with numerous challenges in inconsistent data formats and unstructured information.
