Alan is a graduate of the University of Strathclyde, where he holds a Master of Engineering majoring in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. He is an active member of various international maritime-related professional institutes and societies; he is an Associate Member of the Royal Institute of Naval Architects (RINA) and a Member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME).
