Brian Betz

Associate Director, Powertrain Analysis

Brian Betz is an Associate Director of Powertrain Analysis at S&P Global Mobility.

Prior to the acquisition of Novation Analytics by IHS Markit (Now a part of S&P Global), Brian was Director of Powertrain Analysis at Novation, a provider of software solutions, data analysis and advisory services with focus on vehicle energy requirements and greenhouse gas emissions.

Before joining Novation Analytics in 2014, Brian spent 15 years in engine and powertrain systems development at General Motors and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. At GM, he was a Lead Combustion and Airflow Development engineer, with focus on developing both the Small Gas family of engines and the next generation Small-Block V8. Previous to this assignment, Brian was a lead dynamometer development engineer of GM Ecotec 4-cylinder engines. At FCA he was named supervisor of the Combustion Analysis and Airflow group after spending over 10 years in the powertrain development of several engine families, including the 4.7L, 5.7L, and 6.4L SRT V8 engines. Developing engine hardware and calibrations utilizing engine and full powertrain dynamometers, in-vehicle calibration and emissions verification, 1D simulation and airflow development, Brian's innovative approach became standard development procedures for numerous powertrain development tasks.

Brian graduated from Kettering University (formerly GMI Engineering and Management Institute) with a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and co-op experience with SLP Engineering. He is a co-author of an SAE paper on based on his work with Novation Analytics and is listed as co-inventor on two patents from his time at General Motors related to innovative techniques in detecting variable valve lift system faults.
