Since 2001, the International Seabed Authority (ISA) has granted 31 exploration permits to national agencies and private companies allowing them to assess mining opportunities in well-defined areas of potential mineral wealth.
Unable to agree on the rules and procedures to regulate deep-sea mining, the ISA will begin accepting mining applications in July 2023 when the two-year period specified for the adoption of a deep-sea mining code expires.
