Indonesia emerged in the energy transition space as a key player after imposing an export ban on unprocessed nickel ore in 2020, attracting critical investments to develop downstream processing capabilities to produce nickel matte and mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP) - both expected to become mainstream raw materials for battery grade nickel sulfate production.
With the country expected to make up nearly half of global primary nickel output in the coming years, progress on Indonesian projects is becoming a key focus for the battery markets, though some continue to weigh between cheaper costs and ESG considerations.
