This S&P Global marketing research report covers the following styrenic copolymer products and market:
- High-styrene content styrene-butadiene copolymer (HS-SBC) resins
- Styrene-acrylic copolymers
- Ion exchange resins (IER, styrene-divinylbenzene copolymers)
- Weatherable styrenic copolymers (acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate [ASA] and acrylonitrile-ethylene-styrene [AES])
- Methacrylate-butadiene-styrene (MBS)
- Styrene–maleic anhydride (SMA)
- Styrene-methyl methacrylate copolymer (SMMA, MS resin, methyl methacrylate-styrene)
- Acrylonitrile-chlorinated polyethylene-styrene (ACS)
This report does not include the styrene derivatives and products such as polystyrene (general purpose, high impact and expandable), acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin, styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer resin, styrene-butadiene latex, styrene-butadiene elastomer/rubber, SBC elastomers and unsaturated polyester resins.
The following chart shows world consumption of styrenic copolymers by type:
In the last three years, the consumption of styrenic copolymers, as defined in this report, has slowed down because of the downturn of the mainland Chinese market; lower-than-usual global demand, which led to reduced operating rates and lower margins; the effects of the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Hamas war on the global economy; and high inflation rates and high energy costs, especially in Europe.
The fastest growth in the consumption of styrenic copolymers in recent years has been in India. India’s continued construction, urbanization and its high economic growth has propelled the fastest rate for the consumption of styrenic copolymers among any other region/country. Mainland China continues to be the largest global market for styrenic copolymers, followed by the United States and Western Europe.
Of all the styrenic copolymers defined in the report, styrene-acrylic copolymers has the largest consumption volume, followed by styrene-divinylbenzene ion exchange resins and methacrylate-butadiene-styrene resins.
