Global consumption of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) has fallen modestly from the high seen in 2020, when demand was boosted by its increased use in sanitizing applications in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The United States, Western Europe and mainland China continue to be the largest consumers of IPA, accounting for more than half of total global consumption in 2023.
The following chart shows the consumption of isopropyl alcohol by major consuming region:
Industrial-grade isopropyl alcohol accounts for almost two-thirds of the global market in 2023, consumed for direct solvent uses and the production of chemical derivatives. The balance is for the cosmetic, pharmaceutical and electronic grades. Global consumption of IPA is expected to grow at an average of 2%-3% annually in 2023–28, with most markets in Asia (especially Southeast Asia and Oceania, South Asia [India] and mainland China), showing higher-than-average growth rates over the next five years.
Mainland China continues to be the largest capacity holder, accounting for nearly 30% of global capacity in 2023, with more capacity expansions announced for 2023–28. By 2028, additional capacity is also expected in North America, Western Europe, Central and Eastern Europe and South Korea.
