Northeast Asia (primarily mainland China) accounted for a vast majority of world capacity in 2022, driven by growth in the nylon industry, which drives demand for caprolactam and adipic acid. Mainland China, Japan and Taiwan are the largest uncoupled cyclohexanol/cyclohexanone producers. Western Europe had the second-largest capacity in 2022, with local production sufficient to cater to domestic demand.
A majority of global demand for uncoupled cyclohexanol/cyclohexanone in 2022 was in caprolactam production; the remainder was for adipic acid and solvent applications. Demand for uncoupled cyclohexanol/cyclohexanone is influenced by the Asian/mainland Chinese market, primarily because of the caprolactam and adipic acid production in the region used to manufacture nylon 6 and nylon 66. The United States and Western Europe are the only other large players for the uncoupled product in the market, as much of the cyclohexanol/cyclohexanone these regions produce is consumed captively and not available in the merchant market. The market in Western Europe is larger than in the United States, and this is expected to remain largely unchanged through the forecast period.
The following chart shows world consumption of uncoupled cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone:
