This interim report updates PEP Report No. 13B, issued November 1975. The present report covers a review of the recent developments in the separation of unconverted vinyl chloride from a polyvinyl chloride dispersion prepared by suspension polymerization or emulsion polymerization, and from a polyvinyl chloride mass prepared by bulk polymerization. The processes described in PEP Report No. 13B for manufacturing polyvinyl chloride by suspension, emulsion, and bulk polymerization are modified in this report to incorporate the newly developed vinyl chloride stripping technology, and the economics are reevaluated. Also covered in this report is a newly designed 100 million lb/yr (45,000 metric tons/yr) batch emulsion polymerization plant.
In the evaluation of the above plants, the costs of the polymerizers given in Report No. 13B were revised on the basis of current quotes from the manufacturers of those polymerizers.
