This report presents technology on hexamethylenediamine (HMD) manufacture, Four design cases are included. One case is based on technology for converting butadiene to BMD. This technology was recently published by E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, Inc., and is now believed commercialized. A second case is based on an El Paso Natural Gas laboratory route for converting ally1 chloride and propylene to HMD. A third case is based on an Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd. (ICI) laboratory route that dimerizes acrylonitrile with sodium amalgam. A fourth case uses primarily the Monsanto Company electrolytic dimerization route that starts with acrylonitrile. In addition to the design cases, general technology for these and other routes is discussed.
Process Economics Program Report No. 31 (November 1967) contains designs using starting materials of acrylonitrile (electrolytic route, Monsanto), butadiene (dichlorobutene route, Du Pant), adipic acid, and cyclohexane (diol route, Celanese). The current report emphasizes technology published since the earlier work.
