This report is a supplement to Process Economic Report No. and is concerned with processes for the manufacture of acrylic acid and acrylic esters, particularly methyl, ethyl, n-butyl, and 2-ethylhexyl acrylates. It is based on information that has appeared in the public literature since publication of the basic report.
The major portion of this new information has been on the oxidation of propylene to acrylic acid, and therefore particular emphasis is placed on this process. The low conversion propylene oxidation process evaluated in the basic report was revised to reflect new information on this process, and an evaluation was made of new high conversion propylene oxidation processes. Also, the acrylonitrile process for lower acrylic esters evaluated in the basic report was revised and updated. Further, a new process for esterification of dilute acrylic acid to lower acrylic esters was evaluated in relationship to the propylene oxidation processes.
Also provided in the report are estimates of the capital and production costs for integrated multiproduct ester plants producing the four basic acrylates, methyl, ethyl, n-butyl, and a-ethylhexyl, based on the processes evaluated in the report.
