April 21, 2025
Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, has launched a new daily Americas duty-unpaid premiums basket for P1020 aluminum using a combination of existing Platts duty-unpaid price references for Canada, the US, Mexico and Brazil, effective April 21, 2025, and backdated to March 3, 2025.
Platts first proposed the premiums basket in a subscriber note published on April 2, following market feedback in response to the introduction of new tariffs for aluminum imports into the US. The feedback demonstrated the need to capture changing trade flows and indicated a preference for a duty-unpaid calculation that incorporates multiple Americas pricing locations. The note is available here: https://www.spglobal.com/commodity-insights/en/pricing-benchmarks/our-methodology/subscriber-notes/040225-platts-proposes-new-daily-aluminum-p1020-americas-duty-unpaid-premiums-basket(opens in a new tab).
The new Aluminum P1020 Americas Duty-Unpaid Premiums Basket (Americas DUP) is a calculated simple average (arithmetic mean) of the following Platts P1020 duty-unpaid premium assessments:
Assessment Name | Symbol | Unit |
Aluminum P1020 MW US Transaction Premium (Implied Duty-Unpaid) delivered US Midwest* | MMOIU00 | $/mt |
Aluminum CIF New Orleans duty-unpaid premium | MMODU00 | $/mt |
CIF Mexico P1020 Aluminum Premium | MMPTA00 | $/mt |
Aluminum CIF Brazil premium duty-unpaid ** | MMABP04 | $/mt |
*The MW US Transaction Premium (Implied Duty Unpaid) delivered US Midwest assessment reflects Canadian-origin material. Further details can be found here: https://www.spglobal.com/commodity-insights/en/pricing-benchmarks/our-methodology/subscriber-notes/031225-platts-reflects-prevailing-tariffs-on-canadian-aluminum-in-its-p1020a-us-import-duty-calculation.
**The latest value of this weekly assessment is reflected in the daily basket calculation.
The new Americas DUP, calculated in $/mt with a cents/lb conversion, is published under the following descriptions and units of measure:
Aluminum P1020 Americas Duty-Unpaid Premiums Basket Assessments | Symbol |
Aluminum P1020 Americas Duty-Unpaid Premiums Basket (Americas DUP) $/mt | MALUA00 |
Aluminum P1020 Americas Duty-Unpaid Premiums Basket (Americas DUP) $/mt Mavg | MALUA03 |
Aluminum P1020 Americas Duty-Unpaid Premiums Basket (Americas DUP) cts/lb | MALUB00 |
Aluminum P1020 Americas Duty-Unpaid Premiums Basket (Americas DUP) cts/lb MAvg | MALUB03 |
The Americas DUP calculation follows a global holiday calendar. On days when there are regional holidays impacting publication of any of the duty-unpaid premium assessments, the most recently published value of that impacted premium assessment is used to calculate the basket value.
The Americas DUP has been backdated to March 3, 2025, the first publication date of the Platts CIF Mexico P1020 Aluminum Premium assessment. Monthly averages also will be published from March 2025, in both $/mt and cents/lb.
The new series is published on Platts Nonferrous Metals Alert pages 0203, 0650, 0678 and 0017, Platts Metals Daily, Platts Metals Week and in the Platts price database under the symbols listed above.
Platts announced the decision to launch the Americas DUP in a note published on April 15: https://www.spglobal.com/commodity-insights/en/pricing-benchmarks/our-methodology/subscriber-notes/041525-platts-to-launch-daily-aluminum-p1020-americas-duty-unpaid-premiums-basket(opens in a new tab).
Full details of Platts Americas aluminum assessments are available in the global nonferrous specifications guide here: https://www.spglobal.com/commodityinsights/en/our-methodology/methodology-specifications/metals/nonferrous-methodology(opens in a new tab).
