Infographic: Red Sea diversions fuel Indian bunkering

Bunkering and STS calls at Indian ports surged 55% from January to November, as more ships avoid Red Sea transits. Sri Lanka, a key regional rival, experienced a 51% increase during the same period. Total bunkering and STS calls in India rose to 11,228 from 7,241 in 2023, while Sri Lanka's calls increased to 2,347 from 1,551. Red Sea shipping attacks have led shipowners to take longer routes around Africa, significantly boosting bunker demand at Indian ports in 2024. The Platts Bunkerworld survey indicates total bunker fuel demand in India at 2.25 million metric tonnes this year, with growth expected to continue in 2025, driven by favorable pricing and the removal of excise duty on marine gas oil.
