South Korea to invest $14 mil in project
Silicon anode capable of higher energy density
South Korea has established a consortium to run a recycled silicon battery materials project worth C$20 million ($14.32 million), NEO Battery Materials, one of the consortium's partners, said Nov. 20.
"The project will focus on developing high-performance silicon anode materials based on recycled silicon scrap from semiconductor and photovoltaic wafer manufacturing," the Canadian battery materials technology company said.
NEO said the South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy (MOTIE) and the Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology (KEIT) will invest the stated amount "in government contributions for the next five years in consortium partners."
South Korea's Hansol Chemical is "the head project organization" while "several major battery and chemicals companies are participating as consortium partners, including South Korea's largest cathode materials producer, INNOX eco-M and LiBEST," NEO said.
In June, NEO and INNOX eco-M signed a collaboration agreement to jointly develop silicon anode products by integrating INNOX eco-M's high-purity recycled silicon and silicon-oxide powders as the raw material.
Silicon anode materials are seen as next-generation materials capable of increasing energy density by about four times compared with graphite anodes typically used in lithium-ion batteries.
NEO's participation in the South Korean project comes after it signed a memorandum of understanding with Linde Korea Co Ltd on Nov. 6 to scale up NEO's silicon anode manufacturing for lithium-ion batteries.
NEO operates an R&D scale-up center relocation at Gyeonggi Technopark in Ansan Science Valley, South Korea.
Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, assessed natural flake graphite at $390/mt FOB China Nov. 20, up $15/mt on the day. This price reflects the spot value of natural flake graphite with 94%-95% carbon content and a minus 100 mesh size delivered to the Qingdao port.
Platts assessed flake graphite on a CIF Northeast Asia basis at $420/mt, up $15/mt over the same period. The price reflects materials in Northeast Asia normalized to Japan's main ports.
