Infographic: Africa set for boom in graphite mining projects as EV battery demand surges

With production of electric vehicles on the rise, demand is soaring too for battery raw materials, including graphite, which goes into the battery cell anode. Historically, most graphite has been mined and processed in China, but a number of other countries are now launching projects, mostly in east Africa, as well as in Scandinavia, North America and Australia. Companies are also building facilities to process mined flake graphite into coated spherical purified graphite for use in batteries. Natural graphite is forecast to move into a structural deficit by mid-decade unless more schemes are launched soon.
