Tokyo Gas to supply 150 cu m/hour hydrogen in Harumi
Hydrogen to be sourced from ENEOS' 300 cu m/hour hydrogen station
Tokyo Gas will start Japan's first pipeline hydrogen supply at the former athletes village for the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics in the Harumi district March 29, the largest Japanese gas utility said March 28.
In its 1 km long hydrogen pipeline laid in the Harumi district in Chuo Ward, Tokyo Gas will supply roughly 150 cubic meters/hour of hydrogen to shared facilities at commercial sites and condominium, where city gas is supplied separately for tenants and residents separately, a company spokesperson said.
The hydrogen supply will be sourced from ENEOS' 300 cu m/hour hydrogen station at the Harumi district, where the company expects to refill hydrogen to fuel-cell buses and trucks.
The move by Tokyo Gas comes after it said March 22 that it plans to displace at least about 600,000 mt of LNG with e-methane in 2040 as part of its decarbonization steps, aiming for 50% carbon neutrality in its domestic gas supply by 2040.
The plan is part of the 2050 carbon neutrality roadmap, under which Tokyo Gas aims to slash its scope 1, scope 2 and scope 3 CO2 emissions by 60% from the fiscal year 2022-23 (April-March) in 2040.
The 50% carbon neutrality target in 2040 for the gas supply will be measured by such steps as introducing e-methane, hydrogen and carbon offsets over its gas supply volume, Tokyo Gas President and CEO Shinichi Sasayama told a press conference in Tokyo March 22.
Tokyo Gas, which aims to introduce 1% blending of e-methane into its gas supply in 2030, equating 60,000 mt, expects a tenfold rise by 2040 as part of the decarbonization measures along with hydrogen and carbon offsets to reach 50% carbon neutrality.
Tokyo Gas imported a total of 12.90 million mt/year of LNG in FY 2022-23.
