Diamond Green Diesel St. Charles, Louisiana, renewable diesel plant shut ahead of Ida

Diamond Green Diesel shut its renewable diesel plant located at St. Charles, Louisiana ahead of Hurricane Ida, according to a statement from Darling Ingredients on Aug. 29.

"In advance of Hurricane Ida, DGD was shut down in a safe and controlled manner," the statement said.

Diamond Green Diesel is a joint venture between Darling Ingredients and Valero Energy. The partnership began producing renewable diesel in 2013, with a capacity of 160 million gal/yr with Darling Ingredients supplying the feedstock and Valero Energy the production and logistics.

The 290 million gal/yr plant is located on the site of Valero's 215,000 b/d St. Charles refinery in Norco, Louisiana. Valero earlier said that that the refinery had also been shut ahead of Ida's landfall.

The plant's capacity is currently under construction to expand capacity by 400 million gal/yr by the end of 2021.

Hurricane Ida made landfall midday Aug. 29 near Port Fourchon, Louisiana, with winds up to 150 miles per hour, making it a strong category 4 hurricane.
